Tell us a little bit about you. Things you like outside of school, etc.…

My name is Aimee Zepeda and this will be my first year working at Helms Elementary. I am overjoyed to be teaching in such a welcoming community! I will be teaching Second Grade Spanish Language Arts and Reading this year. This is my fourth year teaching in HISD. I am originally from Illinois and moved to Houston four years ago. Moving to Houston has been one of the best decisions I could have made as a recent graduate in 2017. I have learned so much working for HISD along many great teachers. Most recently, I have applied to Texas A&M Graduate School this summer and hope to start my Masters in the spring. Going back to school has always been a goal of mine since I finished my undergrad.

I currently have three dogs who have kept me company during this quarantine along with my caring husband. When I am not lesson planning, you can find me running around my neighborhood, working out in my garage, or cooking a healthy meal in my kitchen. This year will have its challenges but I am excited to grow alongside my Helms family and take this challenge on!

Give us an idea of your education passion, can you tell us something of why you chose education…

Four years ago I began my journey as an Elementary School teacher. During these four years I have often been questioned why I chose this field. I chose this field because of the moment when a teacher helps a student accomplish a task they did not think they could complete. Getting to know students for who they are as individuals, their likes, dislikes, and using this information to teach is my passion. I aim to make learning fun and personal with students. Every day is an opportunity to teach students something new. A good teacher teaches content well, a great teacher teaches content and social emotional skills. Even though I teach younger students, I am able to help mold their thinking process and create problem solvers, empathetic friends, and creative thinkers.
