Local Houston chefs will compete for the title of Freedom Chef 2017 to raise funds for A 2nd Cup, a non-profit coffee shop fighting human trafficking. The event will focus on the organization’s new culinary training program to support survivors of human trafficking. The second installation of Local Fare for Local Freedom will take place on June 4th at A 2nd Cup, located at 1111 E 11th Street. Guests will have the opportunity to taste signature hors d’oeuvres from each of the participating chefs and vote for their favorite. This fundraiser will also include a silent auction featuring packages from each chef and other packages featuring local products. Participants include Food Network’s Chopped victors Chef Evelyn Garcia of Axelrad and Chef Justin Turner of Bernie’s Burger Bus, as well as Max Torres from Cake & Bacon, Colin Shine of Frank’s Americana Revival, returning 2014 Freedom Chef, Donald Chang of Uptown Sushi and more.
The first Local Fare for Local Freedom took place in 2014 at Top Chef Masters participant Monica Pope’s restaurant, Sparrow. Over 150 guests tasted creations from top Houston chefs like Travis Lenig of Liberty Kitchen, Dawn Burrell of Uchi, and Donald Chang of Nara, and Amalia Pferd of Good Dog. This was a pivotal event for the coffee shop’s funding and launch in the fall of 2015 and enabled the organization to grow their impact in the fight against human trafficking in Houston.
In just over a year as a brick-and-mortar shop, A 2nd Cup has already begun making a positive impact for a cause that matters to many Houstonians. Tens of thousands of conversations have occurred over coffee, educating customers about human trafficking in this city. With over 21 awareness events in 2016, many Houstonians have not only become aware, but have been empowered to join the fight themselves. This fundraiser will enable A 2nd Cup to create a program to provide tangible life and culinary skills to survivors of human trafficking and provide necessary training for participants to transition into a career in the restaurant and food industry.
Tickets for the event can be purchased from A 2nd Cup’s event page: www.a2ndcup.com/local2017. A 2nd Cup is also offering sponsorship opportunities for individuals or businesses and accepting donations for the silent auction.
