Our featured member, Richard Mikeska, was born in Spokane, Washington but grew up in the Houston Heights area. Local Hamilton and Waltrip schools provided his early education and then it was on to Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches.
An early stint with the Real Estate Department at Houston’s Bank of the Southwest served as his foundation for later building a distinguished career in the financial services arena. During his ascent into his chosen field, he has been employed as: A Business Banker, Relationship Banker, Private Banking, Middle Market Commercial Lender and as a Senior Underwriter.
It is interesting to note that at one point, he aspired to be a writer. Unfortunately this 3-year hiatus only resulted in his taking odd jobs and working in construction. Of his construction experiences, Richard painfully points out, “That his hammer and thumb became close friends.” “Epiphany – back to banking!”
Today he is the Houston Market Business Development Officer and Commercial Lending expert for Resource One Credit Union. Building his career was not without hardships, however, he is a Cancer Survivor for 8 ½ years. Did Cancer slow him down? Not for long because he ran his first Marathon at the age of 52, and he has completed 11 more (26.2mile) marathons in places like New York City, Boston and Chicago plus a 50K which is 31 miles!!
Richard is active in many organizations devoted to business, fine arts, running associations and even the Houston Zoo. When not on the track he enjoys hiking, camping, travel, music, all types of outdoor activities, and of course, working out and training. He is a strong supporter of the Chamber, always ready with a beaming smile and a friendly handshake, we encourage members to get know Richard Mikeska in person at Chamber events.
